On December 8, local time, South Korea notified that as of midnight on the same day, South Korea had newly confirmed 7,175 new cases of new coronary pneumonia within 24 hours. This is the first time that the country’s daily increase in confirmed cases has exceeded 7,000, and it is also the highest record since the outbreak. The surge in cases has put pressure on the South Korean medical system.

There were 63 new deaths in South Korea that day, and a total of 4,020 deaths; there are 840 severe cases, a record high for two consecutive days, which also greatly increased the pressure on beds in the intensive care unit. The rapid spread of the mutant new crown virus “Omi Keron” has brought new challenges to South Korea’s epidemic management and control. Up to now, South Korea has accumulated 38 cases of “Omi Keron” infection.

Earlier, the Seoul City Government of South Korea notified that three foreign students studying at Seoul University, Kyung Hee University, and Korea University of Foreign Studies were diagnosed with the new coronavirus mutant Omi Keron. This is the first confirmed case of Omi Keron in Seoul.

The three international students have all been to a church in Incheon, west of Seoul, which is associated with the first case in South Korea and many subsequent Omi Keron cases.

Public opinion in South Korea is concerned that the Omi Keron strain may spread through the transmission chain of universities in downtown Seoul, and at the same time spread across the country through the transmission chain of churches.
